Why is Stephen A. Smith in "General Hospital?"

Smith has said in the past that he is a longtime fan of "General Hospital." His sisters watched it growing up, inspiring him to later join the show.

“I have four older sisters and when we came home from school, all the TVs in the house were on ‘General Hospital,’” Smith told ESPN Front Row in 2016. “Since I wasn’t allowed outside until I finished my homework, I watched the soap every day.”

The ESPN personality said that Maurice Benard, who plays one of the main characters on the show, "recognized that I was a huge fan" and made an effort to get Smith on "General Hospital" after Benard made a guest appearance on First Take in 2014.

"I received a call a few months later to play 'Brick,' a surveillance expert for Sonny and the Mob," Smith told ESPN Front Row in 2016. "With ‘GH,’ you memorize lines in a script, bringing other people’s words to life. The pressure is immense. I practiced and practiced to make my lines conversational. Since I have watched the show for so long, I know Sonny and his mannerisms."

When he first began appearing on "General Hospital," Smith said it was different than live sports TV and that he was nervous.

"I’m never nervous on First Take. It’s my and Skip’s domain. I’m extremely confident on ESPN. I felt like a fish out of water on the ‘GH’ set. I don’t get nervous too often, but I was incredibly nervous," he told ESPN Front Row in 2016. "Maurice made it easy for me, coaching me the entire day. He made me so comfortable that at one point I almost forgot I was on the set."
