The New England Patriots are just under a month removed from their loss to the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl LX, following a remarkable turnaround season under first-year head coach Mike Vrabel.

The Patriots finished the season 14-3, won the AFC East, and rallied through three postseason games to reach the Super Bowl for the first time since 2018–19.

Despite the strong run, they ultimately fell short of their goal and now enter the offseason starting from scratch, making their first — of what is expected to be many — notable moves.

New England announced the release of star wide receiver Stefon Diggs after just one season with the team. Diggs was the only receiver on the roster to surpass 1,000 yards, finishing the year with 85 receptions for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns.

Minutes after the news broke, Diggs addressed his release on social media:

“Thank you for a hell of a year. We family forever [Patriots].”

Diggs will officially hit the open market at the start of the new league year next week, immediately becoming one of the most prominent free agents for teams looking to add an elite offensive playmaker.

For New England, the move was largely a cost-cutting decision.

According to ESPN’s Mike Reiss, Diggs’ salary was set to jump from $10.5 million to $26.5 million, and releasing him now saves the Patriots a significant amount of cap space heading into free agency. He was also slated to receive a $6 million roster bonus if he remained on the team through the start of the new league year.
