Steelers signing Aaron Rodgers just took a huge turn with Derek Carr retirement announcement

3 hours ago 1

Until Saturday, there wasn't really another option for Aaron Rodgers in free agency.

He pretty much just had the Pittsburgh Steelers waiting for him. He was slowplaying proceedings, but everyone seemed to have a good feel for where this thing was going.

But all of a sudden, Rodgers has another option.

The New Orleans Saints lost a QB on Saturday when Derek Carr announced his retirement.

As it stands, the Saints could go with rookie Tyler Shough, second-year Spencer Rattler or third-year Jake Haener at quarterback.

They need a veteran, and they have $30 million freed up by Carr's retirement.

Could Rodgers be in play?

There are no official reports suggesting it, but you have to imagine Rodgers' name has come up.

The future Hall of Famer would likely enjoy playing with Alvin Kamara and Chris Olave.

The Steelers can't afford to miss out on Rodgers. Their other QBs are Mason Rudolph, Skylar Thompson and rookie Will Howard.

Maybe competition from another team helps get the deal done. Or maybe it blows up in Pittsburgh's face that they don't already have Rodgers under contract.

The next handful of days will be interesting. If NFL insiders start to report the Saints as a legitimate option, the suspense will build.

Kirk Cousins' name could come into play as a trade candidate for whichever of the Steelers and Saints doesn't wind up with Rodgers, too.

Stay tuned, because this saga isn't done yet.
