Steelers' best free-agent options to replace George Pickens after trade with Cowboys

The Pittsburgh Steelers made a massive trade on Wednesday morning, as the team is expected to trade wide receiver George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

FOX Sports' Jordan Schultz reported that Pittsburgh will receive a third-round pick for Pickens, and both franchises will also be swapping late-round selections.

Pickens being traded isn't overly surprising. The Athletic's Dianna Russini reported ahead of the draft that the Steelers were taking calls on the Georgia product. Additionally, Pickens has had a ton of behavioral issues to start his career, and is set to hit free agency next offseason, meaning Pittsburgh was unwilling to pay him an extension.

With Pickens out of the equation, the Steelers now have a need at wide receiver. Pittsburgh acquired DK Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks earlier this offseason, but they need another capable receiver opposite the two-time Pro Bowler.

Free agency is likely the place where the Steelers will find Pickens' replacement, but there are only two viable options on the market.

Steelers wide receiver free agent options

Amari Cooper

Cooper had a down year in 2024, as he struggled to find a role in the Buffalo Bills' offense after being traded there during the deadline and tallied career lows in receptions, yards, and touchdowns.

Though the five-time Pro Bowler was underwhelming last year, Cooper still has some gas left in the tank and would be an adequate No.2 receiver opposite Metcalf. The 30-year-old is a savvy route runner who would be an effective security blanket and intermediate threat in Pittsburgh's offense.

Spotrac projects Cooper's next contract will be worth $37.8 million over two seasons, which averages to $18.9 million annually.

Keenan Allen

Like Cooper, Allen had a bit of a down year in 2024. However, the former Los Angeles Charger was still decently productive, hauling in 70 catches for 744 yards and seven touchdowns as the Chicago Bears' No.2 receiver.

Allen has a ton of experience and would slide in as the primary slot receiver in Arthur Smith's offense. Spotrac projects the veteran will land a two-year deal worth around $22.2 million, an annual average of $11.1 million. So, he could be less expensive than Cooper and provide better production.
