Team India all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy is set to be released from the Test squad ahead of the first Test against South Africa, scheduled to begin from Friday, November 14 onwards, at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The youngster will feature for India 'A' in the upcoming List A matches against South Africa 'A' in Rajkot, commencing on November 13.
According to a report by India Today, the team management opted to release Nitish Kumar Reddy from the squad while he was preparing for the upcoming series opener with his teammates.
Nitish Kumar Reddy had featured in both home Tests against the West Indies, and was also included in the squad for the Australia white-ball tour after Hardik Pandya's injury during the 2025 Asia Cup. However, the emerging player also unfortunately endured the same fate after injuring his left quadriceps before the third ODI in Sydney.
The medical team ruled the player out for the first three matches of the subsequent five-match T20I series due to neck spasms. However, he did not feature in the latter stages of the series as well despite completing his recovery.
With India set with their bowling options, and amid plans on reinstating the returning Rishabh Pant into the playing XI along with the in-form Dhruv Jurel, Reddy has been released from the squad.
Since the all-rounder could be in India's plans for the white-ball matches against South Africa, he could get some valuable game time featuring for India 'A', instead of sitting on the bench.
"He might miss out this week" - Team India assistant coach on Nitish Kumar Reddy ahead of IND vs SA 2025 1st Test
Team India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate more or less confirmed the plans to feature both Dhruv Jurel and Rishabh Pant together at the expense of Nitish Kumar Reddy for the first Test against South Africa.
"Our position hasn't changed on Nitish. He didn't get a chance in Australia. But looking at the challenge here, I think he'll miss out from the XI this week," the assistant coach said in a pre-match press conference (via Rev Sportz). The young all-rounder proves to be a valuable addition to the India 'A' white-ball squad led by Tilak Varma, ahead of the three-match affair. The squad does not boast a proper pace bowling all-rounder, with Harshit Rana being the candidate closest to the role before the late change to the setup.
