ST: Miles Teller Quit Profiles After Esquire’s "Kind of a D--k" Label

Miles Teller is still not feeling fantastic about a 2015 magazine profile of him.

More than a decade after a viral Esquire interview referred to him as "kind of a d--k," the Fantastic Four alum revealed how it led him to stop doing those kind of longform profiles altogether.

"That was so mishandled," Miles told Indiewire at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival in an interview published May 19. "The reason why I have not done profiles is because I said, 'Wow, if I’m not doing this interview on camera, this person can misquote things or put things out of order or say things that didn’t happen.'"

According to the Emmy nominee—at Cannes with his new movie Paper Tiger—the published profile "felt like such a violation of what actually transpired" during the interview.

As a result, Miles, 39, made the decision to no longer agree to be interviewed for profiles. He recalled telling his team, "Guys, I don’t think I’m doing this again, because I’m reading this and this doesn’t sound like me to me. This is not life, so why would I ever want to be a part of something where they can just put that in?"

"So it’s unfortunate that being a good person, that doesn’t sell," he continued. "People want to click on the negativity. If you go to bed and put your head on your pillow and how you treat people truly, that’s what matters. That [2015] interview was like 12 years ago."

The Michael star said that the actors, directors and producers he works with know what he's really like as a person, emphasizing how "you can’t hide who you are when you're on set."

E! News has reached out to Esquire for comment, but hasn't heard back.

Along with referring to him as "kind of a d--k" more than once, the magazine's now-infamous profile of Miles—which appeared in the September 2015 issue—began with the line: "You're sitting across from Miles Teller at the Luminary restaurant in Atlanta and trying to figure out if he's a d--k." The article also concluded with the writer saying that the Top Gun: Maverick star could "charm the world with his d--kishness."

And Miles didn't hold back on calling out Esquire at the time. After all, the Whiplash actor slammed the magazine on Twitter (now X), writing, "@esquire couldn't be more wrong. I don't think there's anything cool or entertaining about being a d--k or an a--hole. Very misrepresenting."

Though Miles didn’t hold back with his honesty, he isn't the only star to make their way down the Cannes red carpet. For more star-studded sightings from the festival, read on.
