St. Louis Cardinals get Jesus Baez in trade for closer Ryan Helsley

31-year-old right-handed closer Ryan Helsley has been traded. The St. Louis Cardinals and New York Mets finalized the deal in the final 24 hours of the 2025 MLB trade deadline.

The Cardinals are receiving shortstop Jesus Baez, right-hander Nate Dohm and right-hander Frank Elissalt from the Mets for Ryan Helsley, sources tell ESPN.

The Mets used six players today to get two high-end relievers to put in front of Edwin Díaz. @JonHeyman had the return.

Helsley, who debuted with the Cardinals in 2019, has recorded 105 career saves. He’s coming off the best season of his career in 2024, finishing 7-4 with a 2.04 ERA and 49 saves.

So far in 2025, Helsley has appeared in 36 games and holds a 3-1 record with a 3.00 ERA. Over 36 innings, he’s struck out 41 batters and walked 14. His 21 saves currently rank fifth in the National League.

In exchange, St. Louis will receive Jesus Baez, Nate Dohm, and Frank Elissalt. Baez is 20 years old and a shortstop. He is 5'10, 180lbs. He has played in 75 games this season in minor leagues and is hitting .242, and 10 home runs and 42 runs batted in. He is the Mets' No. 5 prospect, and ranked No. 92 in MLB., and was acquired in the 2022 international free agency. 

He played 72 games in 2924 and hit 11 home runs, while showing versatility in the infield. He tore his meniscus when he moved to High-A Brooklyn.

The Cardinals enter the day with a 55-54 record. They sit fourth in the National League Central but are only 5 games back of a wild card spot in the NL. Following their game against the Marlins Wednesday night, St. Louis will take Thursday off, before heading to San Diego to play on Friday.

New York is coming off a three-game sweep at the hands of the San Diego Padres. The Mets and Phillies have been back and forth in the National League East all season. New York will stay out west and take on the San Francisco Giants for a three-game series over the weekend.
