In the NBA Playoffs, nothing is personal. Fans just saw Coach Jamahl Mosley face one of his best friends in Coach JB Bickerstaff in a Game 7 series. Now, it will be Victor Wembanyama who has to go up against Rudy Gobert for the second round of the postseason. But, the San Antonio Spurs star knows the difficulty in their bouts because the Minnesota Timberwolves center inspired him for so long.
Spurs' Wembanyama reveals how much Gobert served as his inspiration
Prior to the rise of Victor Wembanyama into the public light, Rudy Gobert was the face of French basketball for a good while. He notched the title after Tony Parker started to move out of basketball. Gobert was a good role model too, both on and off the court. The big man won three Defensive Player of the Year awards with the Utah Jazz and eventually got another one with the Timberwolves. So, it is understandable that Wembanyama would gravitate towards having him as an inspiration.
This is why the Spurs superstar thinks it would be fun once they face the Timberwolves in the NBA Playoffs, via Jared Weiss of The Athletic.
"As a role model, there’s lots of things that he’s inspired me and I think should inspire more people. In terms of taking care of your body, he should be a role model for all big men. It’s even more fun if we’re playing against Rudy, amazing for French basketball," the Spurs superstar declared.
Clearly, Coach Chris Finch will use a whole lot of Gobert to stop Wembanyama from popping off. It might also be the same for Coach Mitch Johnson if he chooses to draw the Timberwolves big man out to the perimeter or have another person have to switch to get the Spurs big man an advantage.
To say that this will be a fun series would be an understatement. Fans watching the NBA Playoffs are going to see a mentor and a student clash for the right to get closer in winning the Larry O'Brien trophy.
