Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama lands hefty $251 million contract prediction during NBA Finals

I think one thing many fans of the San Antonio Spurs and other teams with a ton of young talent need to realize is that having young talent doesn't necessarily mean a team will win a championship.

The Spurs are definitely in the best position to do so of any young team because they're currently in the NBA Finals, but even after this year, there's no guarantee they'll get back. Building teams in the NBA is one of the more difficult things to do nowadays, especially with this new CBA.

While the Spurs drafted a boatload of talent and seem to be in a good position to compete for a very long time, contracts are going to get more expensive, there's no guarantee guys are going to stay healthy, and other factors will play a role in how they do long-term.

Contract situations could be the biggest of the bunch, with guys like Victor Wembanyama needing to be paid a hefty deal.

According to cap expert Keith Smith of Spotrac, Wembanyama is definitely in a position to get the full max, predicting him to take a five-year, $251.9 million deal.

“In all the years that we’ve done this exercise this is arguably the easiest projection we’ve made. Wembanyama is getting everything. The full max, with the designated language and the elusive player option on his final season.

“Projection: Five years, $251,931,700 (25% of the cap), fifth-year player option; Designated Rookie language to bump the extension to five years, $302,318,040, fifth-year player option,” Smith wrote.

I know that Wembanyama has said plenty of times that he's really focused on winning, but there's no chance he's going to not take this deal and run with it. He's arguably the best player in the NBA already, and he's going to get paid handsomely because of that.

Rightfully so, too, as he's the future of this league and the organization.
