Spurs linked to trade for $50 million Warriors legend, four-time NBA champion

Eventually, the San Antonio Spurs must move on from their devastating NBA Finals defeat and look ahead to a promising future.

Losing to a beatable New York Knicks squad is a tough pill to swallow, but this is no means the end of the road for a Spurs team expected to be in the mix for titles moving forward.

Regarding potential offseason trades to give the Spurs’ roster a significant boost, Heavy’s Sean Deveney reported that the five-time NBA champions are interested in a Golden State Warriors legend and four-time NBA champion.

“While the (Dallas) Mavericks are not going to get back a hefty return for veteran Klay Thompson, who played only 21.7 minutes per game last season, there are enough contender-types sniffing around that the Mavs have some hope of landing draft capital for him,” Deveney stated Saturday.

“Thompson is 36 but shot 38% from the three-point line last year and has one year and $17 million left on his contract.  The (Detroit) Pistons, Spurs, and (Portland) Trail Blazers are said to be among the interested teams.”

Thompson being involved in trade rumors at this stage of his career isn’t jaw-dropping. Top-tier long-range shooting remains the name of the game for the five-time All-Star, as he shot at least 38% for the 13th consecutive NBA campaign.

That said, the Washington State product off the dribble scoring has taken a hit recently, and he’s no longer a prime candidate to serve as a lockdown defender against opponents’ top-rated perimeter-oriented assets.

For those two reasons, it’s safe to say the future Hall of Famer is on the decline in his late 30s. Add that to the fact that Mitch Johnson and the Spurs have plenty of guards to work with, and it would be hard to imagine Thompson being a priority target for San Antonio this season.
