Spurs front office explains risky Jayden Quaintance decision after draft slide

The San Antonio Spurs entered the 2026 NBA Draft with renewed optimism to bounce back after a disappointing end to their championship pursuit. On Thursday night, the franchise added another promising piece to their future by selecting Jayden Quaintance with the No. 20 overall pick in the first round.

Quaintance’s slide down the draft board came as a surprise to many. He was once projected to be a lottery selection before his sophomore season was disrupted by serious knee problems that significantly limited his availability and consistency. 

Despite the concerns surrounding his health, the Spurs made the decision to take a chance on his upside. Following the selection, Spurs general manager Brian Wright spoke in detail about the organization’s approach to evaluating the young big man’s medical situation.

“He came in and visited so you know our doctors have spent some time but we'll get the people much smarter than us to take a look and come up with the best plan for him and if that is the best plan for him then we will do that and take a very long-term approach. He's got tremendous, tremendous talent and unfortunately that was cut short a little bit due to injury,” Wright said.

Quaintance’s injury history dates back to February 2025, when he suffered a torn ACL and meniscus during his freshman season at Arizona State. After transferring to Kentucky, he made his return to action in December 2025. But his comeback was short-lived. Just four games into the season, swelling in his right knee forced him back onto the sidelines for the remainder of the year.

Despite ongoing questions about his future availability, the Spurs remain in a position where patience is not only possible but strategic. Their postseason run highlighted the need for depth behind Victor Wembanyama, particularly a reliable backup center capable of handling significant minutes to preserve the franchise cornerstone during high-intensity stretches.

A fully healthy Quaintance could potentially fill that role. If he is able to return to full strength and tap into the potential that once made him a top-tier prospect, the combination of Quaintance and Wembanyama could develop into one of the most dominant defensive frontcourts the league has seen in years.
