Spurs blockbuster trade proposal to pair Victor Wembanyama with two-way superstar

The San Antonio Spurs failed to reach the postseason for the sixth consecutive season. While the once-perennial title contenders have not won a postseason series since 2016-17, they were able to land their franchise cornerstone -- Victor Wembanyama with the first overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft.

While Stephon Castle was named the 2024-25 NBA Rookie of the Year on Tuesday, a recent proposal suggested that the Spurs move the guard as part of a package for a superstar that could be on the move this summer.

"Potential trade framework: (Giannis) Antetokounmpo to the Spurs for Stephon Castle, Jeremy Sochan, Keldon Johnson and four first-round picks... Antetokounmpo might be older and less of a shooter than the ideal co-star for Wemby, but any time there's a chance to pair one once-in-a-generation talent with another, you make that move," Bleacher Report's Zach Buckley wrote Wednesday. "Plus, the Spurs are so rich with assets that even a megadeal of this magnitude wouldn't deplete their collection. They'd give up some (but not all) of Stephon Castle, Devin Vassell, Jeremy Sochan and Keldon Johnson plus some (but not all) of the first-round picks they own, but they should still have a solid supporting cast around their stars and avenues for expanding their talent base."

Buckley noted that pairing Antetokounmpo and Wembanyama would be unfair due to their combination of size, length and skill. While the Spurs have been building a strong young core, the addition of the two-time NBA MVP would almost instantly make them contenders for the title.

Meanwhile, Castle and four first-round picks would give the Milwaukee Bucks, who have been bounced in the first round of the playoffs in each of the past three seasons, a solid foundation to start their rebuild. Although Antetokounmpo is 30 years old and nine years older than Wembanyama, he is in the midst of his prime. San Antonio could be motivated to build around their generational talent sooner rather than later to ensure that he remains with the franchise long-term.
