Spurs announcer scandal, explained: What we know about Jacob Tobey cheating allegations that led to firing

Spurs play-by-play voice Jacob Tobey has been let go as the San Antonio Spurs' lead play-by-play announcer following an online controversy, Front Office Sports reported Thursday.

Earlier in the week, multiple posts were made to Tobey's Instagram account alleging that he cheated on his girlfriend with the sister of a Spurs player.

In a post to her own social media account, Tobey's girlfriend later indicated that she was responsible for the posts on the broadcaster's account, which were deleted afterward.

Spurs announcer scandal, explained

Front Office Sports reported Thursday that following public accusations of "cheating on his girlfriend with the sister of a player on the team," Tobey had been let go as the Spurs' lead play-by-play voice.

Neither the Spurs nor Tobey have released public statements on the broadcaster parting ways with the team.

Earlier in the week, on Tobey's Instagram account, a story was shared making accusations of him cheating on his girlfriend. Those posts were later deleted, but went viral across various social media platforms.

"This is my girlfriend of six years. But I cheated on her with Loren Waters. So feel free to continue following me if you really think I’m a good guy because I’m not," the caption of one story read.

Another post made to Tobey's account appeared to show photos of him and the woman he was allegedly cheating with.

Per Front Office Sports, later on, Tobey’s girlfriend "indicated that she was responsible for the posts on his account and that their relationship is now over." Tobey's social media accounts have since been turned to private.

Who is Loren Waters?

In the Instagram posts made to Tobey's account, he was accused of cheating on his girlfriend with Loren Waters, who is the sister of current Spurs guard Lindy Waters III. 

How long has Jacob Tobey been the Spurs play by play announcer?

Per Front Office Sports, Tobey had been calling Spurs games since 2024. Prior to joining that booth, he worked at 9NEWS in Denver and has called play-by-play for outlets including Fox Sports and the Pac-12 Network.

According to The New York Post, Tobey had previously announced in June he signed a multi-year extension to remain in his role with the Spurs.
