The bill’s coming due for partiers in paradise.
Influencers looking to boost their likes and followers on spring break in Florida have been put on notice by authorities — who are warning to issue fines for throwing unruly beach parties.
Volusia County Sheriff’s Office – which covers hotspots like Daytona Beach and New Smyrna Beach – issued the crackdown following more than 100 arrests, medical calls and weapon seizures last weekend as wild spring breakers flocked to the Sunshine State.
“Spring Break Invasion promoters are on notice. We’re coming after you financially for the costs your chaos brings to our community. Also, a special event zone with enhanced penalties will be in effect in Daytona Beach for your next chaotic pop-up event,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement Tuesday.
Police arrested 133 out-of-control spring breakers from Daytona and New Smyrna beaches in Volusia County last weekend, the sheriff’s office said. The letters explained, “If you promote an unsanctioned event and we incur costs – police, fire, EMS and trash clean-up – you are responsible for the cost of that event,” Chitwood said during a news conference.
If the letters don’t thwart the parties, authorities will go so far as to sue the scofflaws, the no-nonsense sheriff added.
“It’s about pop-up events … they are illegal, they put a drain on the resources of this community, they put a black eye on this community and they endanger public safety.
“There’s a way to do business. Get permits. You do things the right way,” Chitwood said.
The special event zone – which will span “from University Boulevard to Silver Beach, from the ocean to the river,” and go into effect starting at 11 a.m. on Friday – will see law enforcement handing out heavier penalties for minor infractions until at least Sunday, according to the sheriff.
Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood announced the crackdown efforts against social media “promoters” behind unruly beach parties Tuesday. CBS12“Everyone we arrest will not be given a ticket – you will physically be removed from the venue and processed at another venue,” Chitwood warned.
“Walking down the beach with an open container, you’re taking a ride. Smoking weed on the beach, you’re taking a ride. Fighting on the beach, you’re taking a ride.”
The heavier measures come after police arrested a whopping 133 spring breakers from out-of-control beach parties last weekend, according to an office statement.
Cops picked up 17 minors, including several whose parents were called to come pick them up because they were drunk or high, Chitwood said Monday.
Police also seized a total of six firearms – including two from one adult and a stolen gun from a juvenile – from people on the sand.
