Sports media’s phony ‘perspective’ is as hypocritical as it is fleeting

Because stuffed-with-stupid telecasts have reduced our minds to consignment shop pin cushions, I’m compelled to begin this piece with “Keys To The Column” stats.

Should you choose to read this, my usual stuff includes 24 percent nouns, 18 percent two-seam verbs, 20 percent adverbs (my “out pitch”), 16 percent highly personal pronouns and 12 percent adjectives. The only time I use a sweeper is after I try to empty the paper shredder.

Anyway, today’s topic is “perspective,” specifically the perspective media falsely claim provides immediate and lasting reflection.

How many times have we watched football games in which a player is blasted down and motionless as players from both teams gather to offer solemn concern and support for the victim before returning to the business that demands and rewards the brutalization of opponents?
