Sophie Cunningham steals spotlight with surprise appearance during Wings-Dream broadcast

Sophie Cunningham traded her Indiana Fever uniform for a microphone Wednesday night, and the veteran guard looked completely comfortable in her newest role. Less than 24 hours after helping the Fever secure a 105-95 victory over the Seattle Storm, Cunningham joined USA Sports’ in-studio broadcast team for the matchup between the Dallas Wings and Atlanta Dream.

Yahoo Sports shared a look at Cunningham on set, where she broke down the action alongside the network’s regular studio crew.

“Sophie Cunningham joined USA Sports’ in-studio broadcast team for Wings vs. Dream,” Yahoo Sports wrote on X, adding a fire emoji.

The appearance offered another reminder that Cunningham’s profile continues to grow well beyond the basketball court. She has become one of the WNBA’s most recognizable personalities, and her candid style appears to be a natural fit for television.

Cunningham had little time to prepare for her latest broadcasting assignment. The 6-foot-1 guard played 24 minutes for Indiana in Seattle on Tuesday night, finishing with 11 points, five rebounds and two assists. She made four of her six shots, including three of four attempts from beyond the arc.

Indiana’s victory improved its record to 18-10 and extended its winning streak to four games. The Fever also scored at least 100 points for the fourth consecutive game, continuing their offensive surge coming out of the WNBA All-Star break. One night later, Cunningham was discussing the league from a completely different perspective.

The assignment was not her first broadcasting experience. Cunningham joined USA Sports as a contributor before the 2026 WNBA season as part of the network’s new coverage package. She previously gained television experience as a guest analyst for the Phoenix Suns during the 2022-23 NBA season.

Still, seeing an active player move directly from a road game to the studio made Wednesday’s appearance especially notable.

Cunningham continues to build growing media career

Cunningham’s willingness to speak her mind has helped turn her into one of the league’s most compelling personalities. She co-hosts the “Show Me Something” podcast with West Wilson and has never been afraid to offer honest opinions about the WNBA, her teammates or life away from basketball. That same direct approach gives her the potential to become a valuable television analyst.

Her playing experience also gives viewers a perspective traditional broadcasters cannot always provide. Cunningham is currently competing against the same players she is being asked to analyze, giving her firsthand knowledge of personnel, defensive schemes and locker-room dynamics around the league. Wednesday’s game gave her plenty to discuss.

Dallas entered the night with an 18-9 record, while Atlanta came in at 16-10 and riding a three-game winning streak. The matchup also featured two of the league’s most prominent young stars in Paige Bueckers and Angel Reese, who generated attention with a physical first-half battle.

Cunningham still has plenty of work ahead with the Fever, who have emerged as one of the hottest teams in the WNBA. However, her latest studio appearance showed that whenever her playing career ends, she may already have her next job waiting.
