Sophie Cunningham has developed a reputation for wearing some of the WNBA’s most memorable pregame outfits. Her latest look, however, left Indiana Fever fans with one simple question.
Wasn’t she warm?
Before Indiana hosted the Las Vegas Aces on Thursday, the Fever shared photos of players arriving at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Cunningham stood out in a heavy, layered ensemble that appeared far better suited for winter than the middle of August. The veteran guard wore a bulky brown jacket over a dark top, pairing the look with loose-fitting pants, boots and sunglasses. The outfit was stylish, but it also looked incredibly warm for an August afternoon in Indianapolis.
“Thursday threads,” the Fever captioned the post on X.
Temperatures in Indianapolis climbed to 80 degrees Thursday. That detail immediately became a talking point as fans reacted to Cunningham’s decision to bundle up on a summer game day.

Several fans wondered how she could comfortably wear so many layers during one of the warmest stretches of the year. Others joked that Cunningham appeared ready for snow despite arriving at an air-conditioned basketball arena in mid-August.
To be fair, players do not spend much time outside during their pregame arrivals. They move from their vehicles into the arena, where the temperature is far more controlled. Cunningham also has never been afraid to wear something unexpected if she believes it completes the look. The 29-year-old has experimented with leather jackets, tiny shorts, cowboy boots, dresses and Western-inspired pieces throughout the season. Her willingness to take fashion risks has made Indiana’s arrival posts appointment viewing for many fans.
Thursday’s outfit continued that trend, even if the timing of the heavy jacket seemed unusual.

Fever suffer heartbreaking overtime loss to Aces
The conversation eventually shifted from Cunningham’s outfit to a dramatic game against the defending WNBA champions. Indiana built a 20-point lead but could not hold off Las Vegas, falling 86-84 in overtime at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Chelsea Gray hit a 3-pointer at the end of regulation to force overtime before burying another at the buzzer to win the game.
Cunningham finished with six points and three rebounds in 24 minutes. She made two of her four attempts from beyond the arc. Kelsey Mitchell led Indiana with 28 points, while Aliyah Boston recorded 14 points and 12 rebounds. Caitlin Clark added 13 points, eight assists and five rebounds, but committed eight turnovers in the loss.
A’ja Wilson powered Las Vegas with 26 points and 13 rebounds. Gray finished with 16 points and nine assists while delivering the two biggest shots of the night. The loss dropped Indiana to 19-12 and extended its losing streak to two games. Las Vegas improved to 22-9.
Cunningham’s winter-ready outfit provided an entertaining talking point before tipoff, but the Fever left the arena feeling the sting of a much colder development: letting a 20-point advantage disappear in a crushing home defeat.
