Sophie Cunningham has a wishlist for the WNBA's next commissioner after Cathy Engelbert

The more Sophie Cunningham thinks about it, the more the Indiana Fever guard realizes that she should replace Cathy Engelbert as the WNBA's next commissioner in 2027.

That's according to Cunningham herself, speaking Thursday on her rebooted podcast, now known as "No Hesitation."

"The more I think about it, the more I should be the commissioner," Cunningham told her new co-host Drew Hanlen. "I think I could get this s--- on the right track."

Cunningham's contentious relationship with Engelbert and the league office is well known.

Last month, Cunningham took a dig at Engelbert when she told USA Today Sports that the WNBA needed a leader "who is bold, who is confident, who wants the best for the players and not maybe for themselves all the time."

Cunningham also was vocal during the tense CBA negotiations last year, which resulted in historic salary increases for players and turned up the temperature on Engelbert -- who last week announced her intention to retire after the 2026 season.

To be clear, Cunningham will not be the WNBA's next commissioner. But the first action item she wants Engelbert's replacement to address is to standardize top-class practice facilities around the league.

Though she didn't directly name them, Cunningham cited the Connecticut Sun -- who are set to move to Texas next year and become the second iteration of the Houston Comets -- as an example of a franchise that needs a dedicated, state-of-the-art facility befitting the WNBA's status as "the best league in the entire world."

"The Fever is about to get the nicest facility you can get next year," Cunningham said of Indiana's upcoming $78 million practice center. "The tides are turning, but I will say there are a lot of owners who are still being very cheap and not giving us (as) professional athletes what we need."
