Sophie Cunningham had to wait several weeks to properly celebrate her 30th birthday, but her family made certain the milestone did not pass quietly. The Indiana Fever guard turned 30 on Aug. 16, the same day Indiana opened a five-game road trip with a 95-91 overtime victory over the Atlanta Dream.
Cunningham spent 32 minutes on the court that day, recording three points, seven rebounds and one assist. With the Fever in the middle of a demanding stretch, an extended birthday gathering had to wait.
The WNBA’s break for the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup finally created an opening in her schedule.Cunningham’s sister, Lindsey, shared photos and videos from a delayed birthday weekend at the Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri. The group spent time on a boat before gathering to sing to Cunningham as she blew out the candles on her cake.
“Next year we won’t wait to do the bday cake after an entire day drinking on the boat,” Lindsey joked in her caption.

The celebration offered Cunningham a brief chance to step away after an eventful season. Indiana finished its five-game trip with a 3-2 record, then defeated the Connecticut Sun 111-91 in its final contest before the break. The Fever entered the pause at 26-14 with a playoff berth already secured.
There is still important work ahead.

Indiana has four games remaining in the regular season and can improve its postseason position before the playoffs begin. The Fever are scheduled to return Sept. 18 on the road against the Toronto Tempo. Cunningham has remained a valuable part of Indiana’s rotation since joining the franchise in 2025. Through 39 appearances this season, she has averaged 8.3 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists while primarily coming off the bench.
Her willingness to defend, compete physically and provide energy has made her a dependable piece for a team with championship ambitions. The World Cup break has given WNBA teams a rare September pause. For Cunningham, it also provided the perfect opportunity to return home and enjoy a milestone that the regular-season schedule forced her to postpone.
The candles were late, but the celebration appeared worth the wait.
Soon, Cunningham will exchange the lake for the practice court as Indiana prepares for the most important portion of its season.
