Sonny Gray one batter from perfection Friday night in Cleveland

The St. Louis Cardinals came into the Friday night game against Cleveland coming off back-to-back losses. 35-year old Sonny Gray just needed the bats to do minimal work, and he would take care of the rest of the business.

Gray was one better away from perfection, as he went the distance in an 8-0 win over the Guardians.

The lone hit for Cleveland came in the fifth inning when Nolan Jones singled to right field. That would be the only base runner of the night for the Guardians.

Gray needed just 89 pitches in the game, with 66 of them coming as strikes. He struck out 11 batters in the game. On the season now, Gray is 8-2, with a 3.36 earned run average.

Major League Baseball took to their official X account and acknowledge the performance by Gray, and termed it a "Maddux". Named after Hall of Fame right hander Greg Maddux, when a pitcher tosses a complete-game shut-out in less than 100 pitches, it is a "Maddux."
