Super Bowl 43 marked the sixth Super Bowl victory for the Steelers, but the NFC upstart Arizona Cardinals didn’t make it easy in Tampa. Pittsburgh led 17-7 at halftime, thanks to an electric 100-yard interception return by James Harrison on the final play of the first half.
But even going down 20-7 early in the third quarter, Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner was unfazed in leading a comeback, armed with fellow Hall of Famer Larry Fitzgerald as his go-to wide receiver. Fitzgerald’s second TD, on a 64-yard catch and run down the middle of the field, gave Arizona its first lead at 23-20, with only 2:34 left in the fourth quarter.
On the eighth play of a 78-yard drive, Ben Roethlisberger found his best receiver, Santonio Holmes, at the edge of the end zone in the back right corner. Holmes kept his feet planted and extended his arms to make the catch, managing to keep the necessary toes in bounds. The Steelers saved the victory, 27-23. Warner, Fitzgerald and the Cardinals ran out of time to answer again with 34 seconds left.
Holmes’ effort is seen as one of the smoothest clutch catches in Super Bowl history.
