Skip Holtz provides update on his father's condition

1 hour ago 3

Skip Holtz shared an update Sunday about his father, legendary college football coach Lou Holtz, after the family announced earlier this week that Holtz had entered hospice care.

“Appreciate everyone’s texts and prayers,” Skip Holtz wrote on X. “Dad is 89 and he is STILL fighting the fight! Only the man upstairs knows how much time is left on the clock. Cherishing the time we still have together in Orlando.”

The update followed a message two days earlier from Holtz’s son Kevin that revealed the Hall of Fame coach was battling a reported health issue. Skip Holtz’s post aimed to reassure supporters amid growing concern and to address false reports late Saturday suggesting his father had died.

Holtz is one of the most revered figures in college football history, best known for his tenure at Notre Dame Fighting Irish from 1986 to 1996. He led the Irish to a perfect 12-0 season in 1988 and a national championship capped by a Fiesta Bowl victory.

His coaching resume also includes stops at William & Mary, NC State, Minnesota, the Arkansas Razorbacks, and the South Carolina Gamecocks, where he retired in 2004.

Holtz transitioned seamlessly into broadcasting, spending more than a decade as an analyst with ESPN, and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2008.

“Lou has always been a national treasure,” FOX Sports broadcaster Tim Brando wrote on X, adding that his thoughts were with the Holtz family.

Holtz turned 89 on Jan. 6.
