The Los Angeles Dodgers could not be hotter coming off their World Series victory over the New York Yankees.
Taking the best-of-seven series in five games last fall, the Dodgers again spent an incredible amount of money during the offseason in order to reload the pieces surrounding superstar Shohei Ohtani. Thus far, it's proving to be the right move.
Entering Wednesday night's game against the Atlanta Braves, the 7-0 Dodgers were looking to set a Major League Baseball record that has stood for nearly a century. As if it were written in a script, Ohtani is the player who eventually pushed the Dodgers over the edge to achieve the monumental feat.
Ohtani's walk-off home run Wednesday night captured the eighth consecutive win to begin the season for Los Angeles. Their 8-0 record to begin the campaign is a new MLB record for a defending World Series champion, surpassing the 1933 Yankees team that began its respective season 7-0.
A record that stood for 91 years now belongs to the Dodgers.
— MLB (@MLB) April 3, 2025That 1933 team featured some incredibly legendary names. Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Bill Dickey, Tony Lazzeri, and Earle Combs led a star-studded lineup that featured six starters with a batting average north of .290. Ruth (34 home runs, 104 RBI) and Gehrig (32 home runs, 140 RBI) led the way while Lazzeri produced 18 homers and 104 RBI.

Meanwhile, Red Ruffing (3.91 ERA) and Lefty Gomez (3.18 ERA) led the starting rotation with 35 starts each. The team, managed by the legendary Joe McCarthy, finished the season only with a 91-59 record — seven games behind the Washington Senators (99-53). The New York Giants eventually defeated the Senators in the World Series.
The Dodgers currently have a roster similar to the legends that stalk Yankee Stadium, and they are beginning to rewrite the history books.
