It didn't take long for the joke to hit social media.
On Thursday, Pope Leo XIV was named the new leader of the Roman Catholic Church. And football fans wasted no time bringing up Shedeur Sanders.
The reason stems from how quickly the cardinals elected the new pope, who was formerly Cardinal Robert Prevost.
The electors went into conclave on Wednesday and had a new pope chosen before Thursday had concluded.

For those keeping score at home, that's two days.
And for those who followed the NFL Draft, Sanders wasn't picked until the third day.
They're also wildly different selections. Pope Leo XIV was the one and only choice by the cardinals, the No. 1 overall pick, if you will.
Sanders, the QB from Colorado, was taken No. 144 overall in the fifth round by the Cleveland Browns.

It's also probably a slightly better outcome to be the leader of more than a billion Catholics worldwide than it is to be in a quarterback battle with Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett for the Cleveland freaking Browns.
Pope Leo XIV, 69, also has a strong chance, God-willing, to last longer in the papacy than Sanders does in the NFL.
Wildly different gigs, but officially two very well-known men.
