Sharks cut ties with 2 players after slow start to season

The San Jose Sharks are already making moves.

In a season expected to be a rebuilding year, the Sharks waived two players on Sunday.

Lucas Carlsson and Jack Thompson were both waived, according to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman.

Carlsson is a 28-year old defenseman. He originally entered the NHL in 2016 as the No. 110 overall pick by the Chicago Blackhawks.

He has since played for the Florida Panthers, as well.

At this point, Carlsson is more of an AHL-level defender.

Thompson is also a defenseman, himself a 23-year old.

He was the 93rd overall pick by the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2020.

Thompson, too, is an AHL-level player at this point.

The Sharks have the potential to be one of the most exciting young teams in hockey if they can put the pieces together.

Right now, though, it's about figuring out who fits best with what.

The Sharks have fought hard to start the season. They've gone to overtime in both of their games.

The problem? They've lost both those OT games.

But it's a good sign that they've hung around that long (and if not for an absurd ending against the Golden Knights, that may have been a win).

For now, the Sharks will keep seeing who fits best in their future.
