What is Shark Week?
Shark Week is an annual event on the Discovery Channel that features shark-themed content. The idea was originally jotted down on a bar napkin during a brainstorming session among Discovery Channel executives, according to The Atlantic, and the first iteration of Shark Week aired in July 1988.
Shark Week has been an undeniable success since it launched more than three decades ago, generating massive ratings for the Discovery Channel and becoming a cultural phenomenon. Producers have stuck to the tried and true formula of presenting several species of sharks as the stars of their shows, though they have faced some criticism for blurring the line between science and fiction.
Over the years, many celebrities have served as guest hosts of Shark Week, including John Cena, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Jason Momoa, Shaquille O'Neal and Andy Samberg.
