Angel Reese is making some major headlines in her second WNBA season with the Chicago Sky. Despite a tough stretch for the team, the forward has stepped up in a big way, earning a second straight All-Star game trip and turning into one of the league’s most well-rounded players.

Reese has filled the stat sheet through 21 games this season. She’s averaging 14 points, nearly 13 rebounds, close to 4 assists, 1.5 steals, and just over half a block per game. What stands out most is how much she’s grown as a playmaker. Last year, she averaged under 2 assists per game. Now she’s nearly doubled that number and taken on more ball-handling duties since the team lost Courtney Vandersloot to a season-ending injury.
She even pulled off her first triple-double back in June against Connecticut: 11 points, 13 boards, and 11 assists. At just 22, she became the second-youngest WNBA player to ever reach that milestone.
NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal has taken notice. On social media, he backed a post from ClutchPoints that built a strong case for Reese to win the WNBA Defensive Player of the Year. The post pointed out that Reese has the second-best odds to win the award on Polymarket Sport and praised her defensive work, especially on the glass.

— Kit Espina (@KeithEspino22) July 16, 2025She's averaging nearly 13 rebounds per game, a league-best 8.9 of them on the defensive end, and has a combined average of 2.1 steals and blocks per game. That puts her among the league’s most disruptive defenders. Though she’s not leading in steals or blocks, her consistent presence has anchored a Sky defense that otherwise ranks near the bottom of the league in efficiency.
Chicago’s defensive struggles may hold her back in the award race, but individually, Reese is doing everything she can to make her case.
O’Neal didn’t add his own words to the post, but just by sharing it, he made it clear that he’s fully behind her.
