Shakira sends touching message to Lionel Messi and his wife after Argentina win

Shakira is cheering on Lionel Messi on his epic win over England in the World Cup semifinals. 

The Messi-led squad defeated England 1-2 on Wednesday, July 15. The "Dai Dai" singer went to her Instagram Stories on Friday, July 16 to send her congratulations to Argentina ahead of their World Cup final match on Sunday, July 19.

“What @lionelmessi is doing is beyond extraordinary!” Shakira wrote. “It shows the values of a man who is deeply committed and disciplined, challenging time and all odds. Proving that a person is not defined by age or what others say.”

Not only did she praise Messi but also gave a shoutout to his wife, Antonella Roccuzzo.

Messi and Roccuzzo have been married since 2017. The couple shares three sons. 

Shakira to headline FIFA World Cup halftime show

Shakira will be on stage during FIFA's first-ever halftime show for the World Cup. Alongside the Colombian singer will be Madonna, Coldplay, BTS, and Justin Bieber, who are also headlining the inaugural show. There will be additional performances from Burna Boy and the PS22 Chorus, who are 4th- and 5th-graders from an elementary school in Staten Island. The elementary school children will be joining Coldplay's set.

Ahead of the halftime show, Shakira shared her excitement to be on stage for the history-making performance.

“It’s going to be a shared halftime show,” Shakira told People. “It’s going to be pretty historic, five amazing artists. Well, four amazing artists plus me.”

As for details on how preparation is going along, she said at the time they are still working out how exactly it is going to be. 

Argentina will be looking to reach back-to-back wins, having won in 2022 against France. The Messi-led team will be facing Spain on July 19 at the New York/New Jersey Stadium at 3 p.m. ET.
