In this series, we take a look at each team and see what they've done over the offseason. Next up is the Utah Mammoth.
Key additions: JJ Peterka, Brandon Tanev, Nate Schmidt, Scott Perunovich, Vitek Vanecek
The Mammoth made arguably the top move of the offseason bringing in JJ Peterka via trade with the Sabres. He will be added to a top 6 forward core that should be deadly next season. They acquired some much needed snarl to the club with the addition of Brandon Tanev. Stanley Cup champ Nate Schmidt is a nice add to the D core. Vitek Vanecek will likely backup Vejmelka in net.
Key subtractions: Josh Doan, Nick Bjugstad, Michael Kesselring, Robert Bortuzzo
The Mammoth lost a couple decent pieces in Josh Doan and Michael Kesselring to the Sabres in the Peterka deal. However, it is fair to say those are departures you are okay with having in order to bring in a player like Peterka. In fact, it is surprising the trade did not cost Utah more assets than that. Otherwise, the Mammoth have not lost much this summer.
Highest draft pick: Caleb Desnoyers, 4th overall
Salary cap space: $6.6 million
Staff: GM Bill Armstrong will keep the coaching staff the same after what was a successful first season in Utah after relocating from Arizona as the club narrowly missed the postseason last year. Andre Tourigny returns to the fold, having previously coached the Coyotes for 3 seasons.
Other: It feels like Utah is done this summer as it has already been a busy offseason as is, but they have the cap space available if they wish to make further moves and increase their playoff odds.
