In this series, we take a look at each team and see what they've done over the offseason. Next up is the Ottawa Senators.
Key additions: Lars Eller, Arthur Kaliyev, Olle Lycksell, Jordan Spence, Hunter Shepard
The Senators have made a few notable depth additions. Lars Eller is a versatile vet who can play throughout the lineup and kill penalties. Arthur Kaliyev will get a needed change of scenery, the 2019 1st round pick looking for a career spark. Jordan Spence will slot in nicely on Ottawa's improved backend. The Sens also got some key extensions done with players such as Claude Giroux, Fabian Zetterlund, Nick Cousins and Tyler Kleven.
Key subtractions: Adam Gaudette, Matthew Highmore, Angus Crookshank, Dennis Gilbert, Cole Reinhardt, Anton Forsberg
The Senators have not lost much of note, mostly depth pieces. They opted not to extend backup goalie Anton Forsberg, who will likely be replaced by Leevi Merilainen who has impressed in the system and his brief appearances with the big club.
Highest draft pick: Logan Hensler, 23rd overall
Salary cap space: $4.2 million
Staff: The Sens will be rolling with the same staff next season. Coach Travis Green will return for his 2nd season with the club after what was a successful 1st year, bringing the Senators back to the playoffs for the first time since the 2016-2017 season.
Other: Overall, the Sens have opted for a quieter summer focused on smaller low risk moves, rather than overpaying and breaking the bank for bigger fish additions in what was a weaker free agent class. It will be interesting to see if they go the trade route to bolster the roster of if they feel confident this team is in position to take another step forward as is.
