The Ottawa Senators could still make some noise this offseason.
After an energetic sojourn in the playoffs to end this past season, there's definitely a case for the Senators trying to make an unexpected splash.
Bleacher Report's Adam Gretz has just the idea: Put together a trade to get Erik Karlsson from the Pittsburgh Penguins.
It'd be a fun reunion. Karlsson was the 15th overall pick by Ottawa in the 2008 draft and played nine seasons for the Senators.
In that span, Karlsson played 627 Ottawa games, scoring 126 goals and adding 392 assists (518 total points).
Since then, Karlsson played five seasons with the Sharks and the last two with the Penguins.
He has 1,084 NHL games overall, with 200 goals and 670 assists.
"The Senators may not be a top-tier Stanley Cup contender, but they are a playoff team with some high-level players and a goalie in Linus Ullmark who is capable of getting hot and stealing a few games," Gretz writes. "Something along the lines of Nick Jensen's expiring contract (and to help open up a spot on the right side of Ottawa's defense, as well as making the money work for Ottawa), a prospect and Ottawa's 2027 first-round pick could be a starting point if the Penguins retain some of Karlsson's remaining contract."
The Penguins are in a spot where it probably makes sense to trade away veterans, even if that means hanging Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin out to try in their final NHL years.
Karlsson is an obvious trade candidate, and the Senators certainly wouldn't be the only team on the phone trying to get a deal done for him.
Ottawa would be the most nostalgic destination, for sure.
