It never hurts to have veteran defensemen around.
The Ottawa Senators have a chance to land one on the cheap.
John Klingberg played for the Oilers in 2024-25, but Pro Hockey Rumors projects him to join the Senators for the season ahead. They've got him signing a one-year, $2.25 million deal by their projection system.
Klingberg revitalized his career by returning from a year-long injury absence to see time with Edmonton.
"Klingberg returned to the NHL midseason after missing more than a year following hip resurfacing surgery, joining Edmonton," PHR writes. "He didn’t play much during the regular season, but he could still be at least a secondary offensive contributor from the back end. In the playoffs, he got a chance to play a bigger role, logging over 17 minutes a night in 19 games. That said, it’s hard to see a team making a multi-year commitment to him until he can get a full season under his belt that’s injury-free. That will have Klingberg looking to balance maximizing his earnings with maximizing his opportunity for playing time for next season."

Klingberg will turn 33 years old in August.
He was a fifth-round pick by Dallas way back in 2010.
He spent eight years with the Stars before getting short stints with the Ducks, Wild, Maple Leafs and Oilers.

Klingberg has played 644 games and has 334 assists to go with 82 goals.
The 6-foot-2 righty scored a goal with three assists in 11 games with the Oilers after returning in 2025.
He certainly isn't the player he once was, but there's no reason for the Senators to avoid taking a simple chance on him.
