No sports fan likes getting exposed for having fraudulent ball or puck knowledge. North Carolina politician Michael Whatley was just exposed for knowing virtually nothing about the state's Stanley Cup finalist team and using AI to make a hockey graphic.
On Tuesday night, just before the Carolina Hurricanes' first Stanley Cup home game since 2006, Whatley took to X, formerly Twitter, to post a graphic supporting the team. However, hockey fans instantly picked up on the randomly-generated player that did not resemble a Hurricanes player.
The day after, Whatley was asked about the graphic, along with his three favorite Carolina hockey players. Let's just hope he wasn't trying to gain hockey fans' votes in the upcoming election.
Here's what the state's politician had to say about his favorite players on the Stanley Cup finalist's squad.

Who is Michael Whatley?
Whatley is running for North Carolina's senator position in 2026 in the Republican Party. The politician was raised in Blowing Rock, N.C., according to his campaign website, and attended Watauga High School in Boone, N.C.
He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a History degree and earned his Master's in Religion at Wake Forest University. After attending the University of Notre Dame, he walked out with both a law degree and a Master's in Theology.
Whatley has been tasked with leading the Presidential Transition’s Energy, Environment, and Agriculture teams after Trump's 2016 victory, along with serving as the Chairman of the Republican National Committee after President Trump asked him to help lead the party’s efforts in 2024.
According to Whatley's X (formerly Twitter) page, he is a "Trump-endorsed conservative running for U.S. Senate to defend our values & secure America’s future."

Michael Whatley shares AI-generated Hurricanes graphic
Ahead of Carolina's first time hosting a Stanley Cup Finals game in 20 years, Whatley took to social media to post about the team's upcoming game. The U.S. Senate candidate posted a graphic featuring the teams' logos, the puck drop time, and a man in a Hurricanes uniform.
One problem: hockey fans had a tough time figuring out which player Whatley actually featured in the graphic. No one on Carolina's roster looked like that, causing fans to immediately sniff out the obvious use of AI generation.
Here is a look at the graphic:

— Michael Whatley (@WhatleyNC) June 2, 2026Since going live on Tuesday, the post has garnered over 300,000 views on X (formerly Twitter) and features a comments section that largely flames Whatley for his faulty AI use.

Michael Whatley Hurricanes interview
Just one day after posting the AI-generated graphic, Whatley made an appearance at an event in Zebulon, N.C., that highlighted President Trump’s policy of not taxing tips, according to The Assembly.
At said event, reporter Bryan Anderson brought up Whatley's graphic and asked him which three Hurricanes players were his favorites. The Senate candidate didn't hesitate to abstain from listing a select group and immediately gave a nonconclusive answer.
Here's a look at that exchange, along with some follow-up questions about his use of AI-generation:
This is worse than when someone asked Trump to name his favorite Bible verse. pic.twitter.com/UAV9CWpjnM
— Carolina Forward (@ForwardCarolina) June 4, 2026"Who are your three favorite Hurricanes players?" Anderson asked.
“You know," Whatley said, "I think we like them all.”
“Look, I think that that’s a team that’s loaded,” he continued. “They’re playing offense really well.”
According to Anderson's story for The Assembly, Whatley eventually pulled the reporter over shortly after to share that Canes defenseman Jaccob Slavin was actually his favorite player.
"I think that this is a guy who has an outspoken faith in God," Whatley reportedly said. "He works hard every single day and kind of represents the best of the sport."

Hurricanes fans react to Michael Whatley
Carolina hockey fans were quick to jump on Whatley's back for his clearly lacking fandom in the state's puck team. Here are some of the best reactions to his AI-generated graphic and lackluster puck knowledge caught in the interview.
One viewer didn't mince words and was straight to the point about Whatley's interview clip:
Incredibly hard watch
— Neil Pierre-Louis (@pierreanalytics) June 3, 2026Another asked when the first time Whatley heard of the Stanley Cup finalist was.
When do you think he first heard there was a team at all? 3 days ago?
— z - Katze Hokke 🏒 (@officeninjacat) June 4, 2026This user questioned why Whatley, or someone on his team, couldn't have just edited an image of an actual Hurricanes player onto the graphic:
Would it have killed you to just Google a photo of a real Canes player?
— 73MPL4R👁️🗨️🍵🎼 (@The73MPL4R) June 3, 2026Another Canes fan brought up North Carolina's Governor and former Attorney General, Roy Cooper, who used to actually attend the team's games and knew about the team.
@RoyCooperNC is a true fan since at least 2005 when he sat in front of my family at the games as Attorney General. Can’t say the same for this Johnny Come Lately…he can’t even name a real player without help…
— Sally Spencer (@Suthrnsal) June 4, 2026Finally, one internet sleuth found that Tuesday's post was Whatley's first time mentioning "Canes" on his X (formerly Twitter) profile.
