Diane Keaton last stepped out publicly in 2024 to do some shopping in Los Angeles, nearly a year before a family spokesperson confirmed she died in California.
Celebrity Deaths: 2025’s Fallen Stars
Diane Keaton spent her final months out of the public eye.
The Annie Hall actress has died in California, a family spokesperson confirmed to People Oct. 11. She was 79.
However, she hadn't been seen publicly in nearly a year before her passing. In fact, her last public appearances were holiday shopping last Christmas and stepping out for errands in August 2024.
At the time, Keaton was dressed in her signature bowl hat and glasses, completing her casual look with boxy grey trousers, a black turtleneck and a dark blazer.
She appeared to be in good spirits, smiling and waving at onlookers while shopping in Los Angeles.
But even that was a rare sighting of the Oscar winner. Prior to her day out in L.A., Keaton was seen the year before at the 2023 U.S. Open Tennis Championships, cheering in the stands during the final game between Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka in New York City.
Sipping a drink while watching from a box alongside Ariana DeBose, Keaton was clad similarly in a neutral ensemble: white trousers, a black-and-white striped blouse, her dark blazer and a bowl hat.
And perhaps if there was one thing she was known for besides her acting, it was her sleek fashion.
"I think you almost always have to have a little bit of the color black to frame things," Keaton told Interview Magazine in 2021. "I think it really sucks you in. Right now, I have on a black t-shirt with a scarf that has black and white polka dots. I’m always going to love black because it highlights. It accentuates. It’s beautiful. Whatever."

But at that time in her life, Keaton was less focused on appearances and being in the spotlight and more on her personal adventures. In fact, when pal Carol Kane asked what she values most during the interview, Keaton responded, "I value a very strong friendship, like ours, which I’ve depended on for such a long time."
"I love to walk with my dog," she continued. "These are the things I love. And I really do love nature. I love exploring California. I like driving to Arizona. I really enjoy seeing. I guess my favorite thing in life is the fact that I can see. It’s just so unbelievable."
