Atlanta, GA. -- Texas has emerged as the preseason favorite to win the 2025 SEC Championship, according to a media poll released at SEC Football Media Days. The Longhorns received 96 votes to be crowned SEC Champion when the title game is played December 6 at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Georgia is projected as Texas’s opponent in a potential rematch of last season’s dramatic overtime finale, earning 44 votes to repeat as champion. Alabama (29 votes) and LSU (20) rounded out the top four in championship predictions.
Texas and Georgia also sit atop the predicted order of finish, with the Longhorns gathering 3,060 points to the Bulldogs’ 2,957. Alabama (2,783 points) and LSU (2,668) followed closely behind in the poll, which drew ballots from media members covering the league.
The two teams with the best conference records during the regular season will advance to the championship game under the SEC’s current format.
Despite preseason predictions, history shows that the media favorite seldom takes home the SEC crown: in the past 33 years, only 10 teams dubbed preseason favorites have gone on to win the championship.
Last season’s SEC Championship Game between Georgia and Texas averaged 16.6 million viewers across ABC and ESPN, peaking at 19.7 million—a record for the college football season and the third-largest regular season college football audience ever on the ESPN networks. Georgia edged Texas in overtime, delivering one of the highest-rated matchups of 2024.
