Seahawks have tricky question amid looming Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Devon Witherspoon contracts

After winning Super Bowl 60, the Seattle Seahawks got to celebrate in a big way. It was incredibly deserved. But, looking into the future, the Seahawks have a lot of work to do.

There is a litany of free agents on the current roster, including Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker and cornerback Tariq Woolen. There are a lot of free agents for Seattle, but the biggest question they face this offseason revolves around two players not hitting the open market.

Instead, as Bradley Locker of PFF.com points out, the future extensions for Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Devon Witherspoon are two massive questions the Seahawks face going forward that will have an impact on this year's free agency.

Seahawks face tricky questions on young superstars

"... general manager John Schneider will likely grant extensions to stars Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Devon Witherspoon as part of his 2023 class," Locker writes. "Even though Seattle owns over $72 million in cap space, it may be a jigsaw puzzle to accomplish everything that Schneider desires - with personnel losses inevitable."

There should be no bigger priority this offseason - other than re-signing Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker - than the extensions on Smith-Njigba and Witherspoon.

They're two of the best players at their respective positions, with JSN being the Offensive Player of the Year after a breakout season, and Witherspoon being one of the best cornerbacks in the league.

The Seahawks cannot, under any circumstances, let either walk or leave the team in the future. They do have two more years of control, but the Seahawks shouldn't let either walk or even get close.

Extending them this offseason, as soon as possible, is the smartest thing to do. Contracts will only increase if they wait; there's no time like the present.

But, in the wake of such huge decisions, the Seahawks would likely lose a few of their current outgoing free agents. Woolen might be the odd man out, while Rashid Shaheed, Boye Mafe, Josh Jobe, and maybe even Walker could all leave this offseason.

It will sting to lose some key players after a Super Bowl run, but keeping Witherspoon and JSN in Seattle or as long as possible is the best thing the Seahawks could do this offseason.

Locker points to both of these extensions as the biggest question Seattle is facing this offseason, and with how much impact those deals will have on roster construction, it's not hard to see how these two deals are the biggest decisions this offseason for the Seahawks.
