Seahawks blast Druski for Jaxon Smith-Njigba OPOY mispronunciation

1 hour ago 3

The Seattle Seahawks are getting ready for Super Bowl 60 and their matchup against the New England Patriots. But the Seahawks have already secured one win this week, as Jaxon Smith-Njigba won the Offensive Player of the Year Award.

He had 119 catches for 1,793 yards receiving with 10 touchdowns for Seattle this season. It's his first such award, and it's very much deserved.  However, the announcement at the NFL Honors ceremony wasn't well-received.

Druski mispronounced Smith-Njigba's name when presenting the award, and in an offensive way. This mistake by Druski did not sit well with many people, to the point that the Seahawks organization blasted the comedian for his on-stage mispronunciation.

The Seahawks PR account on Twitter/x put out a statement blasting Druski for his mistake, not holding back on the comedian for his offensive mispronunciation of Smith-Njigba's name.

"Hall of Famer Barry Sanders drew the short straw getting stuck with @druski's big whiff tonight," Seahawks PR posted. "Put some respect on @Seahawks WR @jaxon_smith1's name."

As shared by Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team, the video of Druski messing up Smith-Njigba's name is not a good look. His initial attempt was better, but he followed it up with multiple attempts that were borderline, if not offensive.

It's not a surprise that people weren't happy with Druski after this moment, but for the Seahawks PR account to not only comment on it, but also blast Druski for it, is a lot more impactful than any other comments.

While not the main Seahawks Twitter/x account, it's still a part of the Seahawks organization. Putting Druski on blast like this is significant, as the organization is clearly not happy with how JSN's name was mispronounced.

This statement isn't the only one made on the Druski incident. Seahawks linebacker Uchena Nwosu also put Druski on blast, simply posting on Twitter/x: "Druski lame."

Mispronouncing JSN's name is already not a good look for Druski, but the circumstances surrounding the mispronunciation make things look a lot worse than they already were.

Brett Kollmann of The Bootleg Football Podcast had a great summary of how many who were upset with Druski felt.

"Not really down for an award presenter intentionally mispronouncing a winner's name as a joke just so they can make that person's biggest individual achievement of their life all about them," Kollmann posted.

While it's difficult to know if Druski mispronounced JSN's name on purpose, not knowing how to pronounce one of the candidates for the award he's presenting is hard to believe.

He had plenty of time to learn how to pronounce his name, and yet not only did he mess it up, but he did so in a way many found offensive.

Not only did fans, media members, and a teammate of JSN's take offense to this pronunciation, but the Seahawks organization also called out Druski directly on Twitter/x in a move that clearly shows how the Seahawks were not a fan of how Druski announced the honor.
