Scheffler leads Morikawa as storm halts play at Travelers Championship

Scottie Scheffler held a one-shot lead over Collin Morikawa in the final round of the Travelers Championship as lightning and torrential rain halted proceedings at TPC River Highlands, with the world No 1 five holes away from victory.

Scheffler had started the day one shot back of overnight-leader Viktor Hovland, who is out to secure his eighth PGA Tour victory and his first in 15 months.

But the Norwegian appeared to wilt under the pressure, despite an imperious opening three rounds, with Hovland starting with a bogey on the first, after finding the rough with his tee shot.

Hovland settled, making par on the next four holes, before mixing in three bogeys and three birdies to fall back off the pace to 19 under before the klaxons sounded.

A chasing pack of players mounted a charge on the leaderboard, with Morikawa shooting a career-low score of 61 to make up nine shots on the leaders and tie Scheffler at 20 under to take the clubhouse lead.

Like Hovland, world No 1 Scheffler also stuttered on his front nine. Despite making a birdie on the fourth hole, he struggled to drain putts early on, and failed to save par on the seventh after missing the green in approach.

The four-time major winner, who is out to win his second PGA Tour title of the season, hit back with birdies on holes 10 and 13 to take a one-shot lead over Morikawa as the skies turned grey and the players were escorted off the course.

US Open champion Wyndham Clark also enjoyed a great round, posting six birdies to move to 19 under through 14 holes, while England's Matt Fitzpatrick also rose to within three shots of Scheffler, with seven birdies and two bogeys, with three holes still to complete.
