Saquon Barkley showered with 'Thank you, Giants' chants as Eagles fans troll New York over free agency decision

Thanks to the offseason edition of "Hard Knocks," we know the Giants had a line they wouldn't cross when it came to retaining Saquon Barkley in free agency. The Eagles went farther than New York was willing to go in negotiations, and that brought the former No. 2 pick's time in East Rutherford to an end after six seasons.

That moment might have only been the beginning of another nightmare for the Giants.

New York already dealt with the embarrassment of Barkley running for 176 yards and two touchdowns against his former team in October, and now Eagles fans are trolling their NFC East rival for being so willing to let the Offensive Player of the Year contender walk.

Here's a look at what Eagles fans chanted after another big performance by Barkley in a win over the Commanders.

The "Thursday Night Football" crowd in Philadelphia showered Barkley with chants of "Thank you, Giants!" after the Eagles' 26-18 win over Washington.

The Amazon Prime Video crew paused its interview with Barkley to let the audience at home hear the chant as clearly as possible, leaving no doubt Eagles fans were taking a jab at their struggling division rivals.

Barkley got off to a slow start against the Commanders on Thursday, but his explosiveness could only be contained for so long. He broke free for a pair of touchdowns to ice the game and finished with 146 yards on the ground, pushing himself into the NFL lead for rushing yards 1,137 through 10 games.

For Giants owner John Mara, it might have been another sleepless night.

Mara pushed for the franchise to retain Barkley in free agency, telling GM Joe Schoen, "I'll have a tough time sleeping if Saquon goes to Philadelphia," with the "Hard Knocks" cameras rolling.

Schoen, however, made it clear he wasn't going to go all out to keep Barkley in New York. When he received word of the Eagles' three-year, $37.75 million offer to his franchise running back, he told Barkley's agent, "We're out."

Paying any running back nearly $13 million per year is a significant risk, but the early returns are exactly what the Eagles were expecting. A deep playoff run would validate that decision even more, but it's clear Philadelphia is content with its big free agency move while the Giants — who, at 2-8, likely wouldn't be anywhere near playoff contention with Barkley — can only watch.
