The New Orleans Saints' future plans will become more clear once they find their head coach. Until then, the only real positive heading into the offseason is that the Saints currently have the No.9 overall pick in April's draft. That's about is, as New Orleans' infamous cap space situation is still unresolved, as they're $52 million over the limit.
The Saints may have to bite the bullet for a year or two in order to get their cap space back to normal. That will include offloading some of their larger contracts, which is what they did by trading Marshon Lattimore to the Washington Commanders near the trade deadline.
Maurice Moton of Bleacher Report proposed another Saints trade, this time the team shipping away Tyrann Mathieu.
Safety Tyrann Mathieu wanted to play in his home state, and he's provided a ball-hawking presence on the field in New Orleans, recording 24 pass breakups and 10 interceptions in three seasons with the team. However, the Saints could attempt to trade Mathieu, who turns 33 in May and has an $11.3 million cap hit in 2025. Again, the Saints can find an opportunity to cut costs, add draft capital and get much younger across the roster.
Mathieu has remained one of the most durable players at his position, which is even more impressive given his age. He's also continued to play at a high level, but the Saints could look to get rid of his contract. If they trade him after June 1, they'll save over $7 million. It's a scenario they'll have to look into.
