Saints named as 'best landing spot' for ex-Chargers five-time Pro Bowl WR

The New Orleans Saints have made it their goal this offseason to surround Tyler Shough with the best talent possible, and they've done so by making a lot of moves.

Travis Etienne Jr., David Edwards, and Noah Fant signed in free agency, while Jordyn Tyson, Barion Brown, Bryce Lance, and Oscar Delp were drafted. This team is in a great spot, but there is room for even more improvement, even at wide receiver.

Daniel Popper of The Athletic, in trying to find the "best possible landing spot" for the remaining free agent WRs, identified the Saints as the best option for former Los Angeles Chargers WR Keenan Allen for a few interesting reasons.

"Keenan Allen. Best landing spot: New Orleans Saints," Popper writes. "... Saints coach Kellen Moore was the Chargers' offensive coordinator in 2023. That season, Allen had one of the best years of his career, setting the franchise single-season receptions record in 13 games."

That 2023 season for Allen, while three years ago now, is one reason to believe that Allen to the Saints would make sense. He's familiar with Kellen Moore, as he was the offensive coordinator for his record-breaking season.

Allen in 2023 put up 108 receptions on 150 targets for 1,243 yards and seven touchdowns, earning his fifth, and most recent, Pro Bowl nod.

While it might make sense for Allen to reunite with Moore, does it make sense for the Saints? As Popper noted, "Additionally, the Saints are lacking experience in their receiver room behind No. 1 option Chris Olave."

Tyson, Lance, Brown, and even Devaughn Vele are young receivers who can't really be trusted as veteran receiver options outside of Olave.

Adding Allen would give the Saints a veteran presence in the WR room who could help the youngsters develop and give high-quality depth for Shough and Moore.

Last season for the Chargers, Allen put up 81 receptions on 122 targets for 777 yards and four touchdowns at 33 years old.

Now 34 years old, Allen isn't a long-term solution to the WR room. But adding him to the current receivers, who are very inexperienced, would be a smart decision to raise the floor of the offense for Shough.

The Saints are Allen's "best landing spot" as he'd reunite with a play caller he had a lot of success with, and help add experience to a very young and green WR room in New Orleans. This fit makes a lot of sense and would be a huge help for the Saints in 2026.
