Sadiq White's transfer decision could define Gerry McNamara's early Syracuse tenure

Gerry McNamara will have plenty to do as he takes over as Syracuse University's head basketball coach.

The SU legend is back, and it is a big next step for the program. For G-Mac himself, though, one of his biggest first steps could involve Sadiq White Jr.

The uber-talented freshman just completed his first year with the Orange. Whether or not McNamara can keep White around could be huge.

Kiyan Anthony was the highest-profile freshman in this year's SU class, but he wasn't the best.

White was a top-30 recruit in the Class of 2025 out of Charlotte, North Carolina by way of IMG Academy.

He flashed his talent at times as a freshman, but the overall numbers don't blow anybody away. White averaged 6.1 points and 3.3 rebounds per game, and he shot 54.7% from the field and 36.8% from 3-point range.

White, at 6-foot-9 and left-handed, showed off immense athleticism and a lot of instincts. He's got the traits to be an impactful player at both ends of the floor.

In modern college basketball, new coaches often end up with almost entirely new rosters. That makes it tough to succeed right away, especially for a guy like McNamara who hasn't been a high-major head coach before.

Keeping some continuity, especially in a young talent like White, would have a chance to be a game changer for G-Mac.

White will likely get lots of interest if he decides to leave. But if Gerry can get him to stay, that could be a huge foundation-building move in this new era of the Orange.
