The Buffalo Sabres are almost there.
After 14 long years without a playoff appearance, they can taste the postseason now. They enter Tuesday night with a magic number of just seven points -- between their points gained and points dropped by teams on the fringe of the Eastern Conference playoff picture, that's how close the Sabres are to clinching a spot.
And on this Tuesday night in particular, a lot can happen. The Sabres can drop their magic number as low as 3.
This is how Mike Harrington of The Buffalo News framed the picture on X on Tuesday morning:
Stealing from politics, welcome to Super Tuesday in the East. Quest for 100. Magic number for #Sabres could get to as low as 3. It starts the night at 7.

The Sabres can also get to 100 points for the season with a win, which is something very few would've believed if you had suggested it in early December.
This is a team that at one point had a regulation record of 11-14 and now has a regulation record of 45-21.
That seems pretty much impossible.
This season, though, the Sabres have redefined what is possible. And because of that, the playoffs are starting to feel like they're right around the corner.
