Ryan Fitzpatrick doesn’t think the latest move made by Dolphins quarterback Zach Wilson will do him any favors.
Not long after the Dolphins announced new jersey numbers Wednesday, with the newly signed Wilson electing to wear No. 0 for the 2025 season, Miami’s former quarterback offered a few choice words about the former first-round pick’s decision as he embarks on a new chapter in what’s been a rocky NFL career.
“Hey Zach there’s always time to change your mind…I know you’re friends with Braxton Berrios and I know it worked for Orlando Woolridge but if you’re trying to build back your career and be taken serious (which I’m sure you are) this won’t help…,” Fitzpatrick posted Wednesday on X.
The “Thursday Night Football ” analyst, who sported No. 14 throughout his NFL career, including a two-season stint in South Beach from 2019-20, expanded on his warning to Wilson in a follow-up post.
“It might be silly but perception matters in this business and a QB trying to resurrect his career wearing #0 doesn’t scream serious QB,” the 42-year-old Fitzpatrick responded to an X user.
Berrios, a wide receiver and Wilson’s former teammate with the Jets, wore No. 0 in his two seasons with the Dolphins.
He signed with the Texans in free agency after spending the last two years in Miami.
Late Bulls star Orlando Woolridge also wore zero during his time in Chicago.
The NFL greenlit players wearing No. 0 in 2023.
With his move to the Dolphins, Wilson, 25, is now on his third team in two years.
He was traded to the Broncos last April, ending a roller-coaster, three-year tenure in New York, before signing a one-year, $6 million contract with the Dolphins in March.
Wilson, who wore Nos. 2 and 4 with the Jets and Broncos, respectively, is looking to re-energize his career as starter Tua Tagovailoa’s backup.
Although the numbers tied to Wilson aren’t exactly stellar — he’s thrown 23 touchdowns to 25 interceptions and posted a career record of 13-21 — Miami brass is eager to see what their former Jets rival can do in a new environment.
“Zach has won a few games,” Dolphins general manager Chris Grier said earlier this month. “I know everyone is going to say his record and stuff, but I think for us in dealing with it and getting to know him, talking once he signed and getting to know him and going through it and going back to the relationships people had with him prior to the draft when he came out. We just felt that in talking to him and some veterans that he was the right fit and right choice for us because we do think that his skill set really fits what our offense does.”
The Dolphins finished 8-9 last season and missed the playoffs.
Tagovailoa was sidelined at different points due to a concussion and hip injuries, with backups Skylar Thompson and Tyler Huntley getting nods to start and struggling in his place.
