(Bloomberg) — A Russian ballistic missile strike leveled much of a residential building in Kharkiv overnight, part of a massive drone and missile attack across Ukraine that shattered days of relative calm.

At least seven people were killed and ten injured in the northeastern city, which has borne the brunt of Kremlin attacks throughout the conflict now into its fifth year. Nineteen apartment buildings and a school were damaged and several shopping kiosks were destroyed as well, said regional Governor Oleh Syniehubov.

“Russia used 29 missiles, nearly half of them ballistic, and 480 drones, most of them shaheds, against Ukraine,” President Volodymyr Zelenskiy posted on X. “They targeted energy infrastructure in Kyiv, the Khmelnytskyi and Chernivtsi regions, and the railway in the Zhytomyr region.”

Damage was also reported in the Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, Vinnytsia, Odesa, Poltava, Sumy, and Cherkasy regions. Relevant services are working wherever necessary.

“There must be a response from partners to these savage strikes against life. I thank everyone who will not remain silent,” Zelenskiy added.

Zelenskiy visited troops defending the Donetsk region on Friday, and warned that Russia was preparing an offensive in the region this spring.

Negotiations to end the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine are currently on pause now that the war in the Middle East has diverted attention of the US, which has facilitated several rounds of talks so far.

US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff said on Friday that additional progress is anticipated in the weeks ahead, without providing more detail, as Ukraine and Russia completed a new prisoner exchange.

“Pressure on Russia must be increased in order to restore a lasting peace for Ukraine and for the sake of international peace and security,” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said on X following the overnight strikes.
