Russell Wilson fires back at Broncos' Sean Payton over his comments towards the Giants QB

2 hours ago 2

The Denver Broncos and the New York Giants faced off in Week 7 in what wound up being one of the greatest games of the season. Bo Nix led an improbable comeback that might happen only once every 100 years, as Denver came back from down 26-8 with under six minutes to go in the game.

But Sean Payton, amid praise for Giants rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart, took a subtle shot at Russell Wilson, as he was hoping he wouldn't have to face Dart during the Broncos' Week 7 matchup against the Giants.

Wilson responded, calling out Payton for his comments, saying the Broncos head coach is "classless" and said Payton is still "bounty hunting." After a rough separation in Denver, Wilson has some bad blood with Payton.

Russell Wilson calls Sean Payton 'classless' after Jaxson Dart comments

"Classless... but not surprises....." Wilson posted on Twitter/X, "Didn't realize you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the media 😎😂 #LetsRide 🤣"

What sparked this response from Wilson was Payton's comment about the Giants benching Wilson in favor of Dart. "We were hoping that that change would've happened long after our game," Payton said.

This was a dig at Wilson, as Payton was hoping that the Giants would have had Wilson still in at quarterback for the Broncos-Giants game, a better matchup in Payton's mind for his defense than facing Dart.

Wilson's response didn't pull any punches. He called the Broncos head coach "classless" and also brought up Payton's connection to Bounty Gate back when he was the head coach of the New Orleans Saints.

Payton's dig at Wilson, even if unintentional, added fuel to the fire that was the split between Wilson and Payton in Denver. The Broncos moved on, drafted Bo Nix i the 2024 NFL Draft, while Wilson went to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

After a short stint in Pittsburgh, he signed with the Giants to be the starter to open the year, and only a few weeks into the season, Wilson was benched for Dart.

Payton was hoping that the Giants wouldn't make that switch until after Week 7, implying that he would've rather faced Wilson. With their split just a little under two years prior, there is still some bad blood between Wilson and Payton.

Wilson's post drew a lot of attention on Tuesday afternoon, and it wouldn't be a surprise if Payton is asked for a response to what his former quarterback said about him.
