Ruben Amorim's first Manchester United game just got even more interesting

New Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim took charge of day-to-day operations at the start of this week, overseeing training.

His first official game in charge comes on Sunday when the Red Devils visit newly-promoted Ipswich Town.

The game will come with high expectations and a lot of nervous uncertainty for United fans, and that's probably even moreso the case following Tuesday's news.

It has been confirmed by the Premier League that the matchday official for United's visit to The Tractor Boys will be Anthony Taylor.

The official has for a very long time been considered a detriment to the Mancunians' results by supporters, though they aren't the only team fanbase who feels this way.

Either way, one particular Taylor game will be very strong in the mind of fans when Sunday's big match kicks off at Portman Road.

In March of 2023, United were held to a 0-0 draw by Southampton during which Casemiro was controversially sent off. The Brazilian was originally booked by Taylor before a VAR review compelled the official to change his decision.

Then manager Erik ten Hag, recently sacked to be replaced by Amorim, was livid with the decision.

"Casemiro played over 500 games in Europe and he never had one [straight] red card," explained Ten Hag at the time. "And now, in 20 games in the Premier League he has [two] red cards.

"We will deal with [his suspension for four games]. The issue is that this game was influenced by the referee."

Taylor's only other United game this season as referee was the 3-0 defeat to Liverpool.

The 46-year-old's assistants on Sunday will be Gary Beswick and Adam Nunn, and the fourth official is Matt Donohue. Australian Jarred Gillett will be on VAR duty, assisted by Neil Davies.
