Rory McIlroy only making glaring wart on his image worse after PGA Championship drive issue

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — As of the time he was readying to tee off for his PGA Championship third round Saturday at Quail Hollow, the week had not exactly gone as Rory McIlroy had intended and hoped.

This was not the triumphant encore anyone expected in the wake of McIlroy’s Masters victory last month at Augusta, where he completed the career Grand Slam.

When he arrived in Charlotte earlier in the week, McIlroy was on top of the world, basking in the glow of his crowning achievement, having satisfied every career goal he possibly could have dreamt. He articulated that much on Wednesday during his pre-tournament meeting with the media.

“Look, I have achieved everything that I’ve wanted,’’ he said. “I’ve done everything I’ve wanted to do in the game. I dreamed as a child of becoming the best player in the world and winning all the majors. I’ve done that. Everything beyond this, for however long I decide to play the game competitively, is a bonus.’’
