Every time Atlanta Braves fans see Ronald Acuña Jr. walking off the field early, the reaction is immediate. Hold your breath first. Ask questions later. That is the reality that now follows one of baseball’s most electrifying stars after years of devastating injuries, lengthy recoveries and constant concern about whether his body can withstand the grind of another full season. So when Acuña exited Thursday night’s game against the Miami Marlins in the sixth inning, the panic understandably started almost instantly.
Thankfully for Atlanta, the early update sounded far less severe than many initially feared. The Braves announced during the game that Acuña was removed “as a precaution” because of pain in his left thumb. Importantly, it did not appear connected to the left hamstring strain that already sidelined him earlier this season. That distinction matters enormously for Atlanta.
Ronald Acuña Jr.’s health remains the Braves’ biggest question
The Braves can survive cold stretches offensively. They can survive injuries around the roster. What becomes much harder to overcome is another major issue involving Acuña. Not because he is simply their best player, but because he changes the emotional energy of the entire team when he is healthy and aggressive.

— Atlanta Braves (@Braves) May 22, 2026Even Thursday showed flashes of that impact before he exited. Acuña collected two hits and drove in two runs, helping Atlanta build a 6-2 lead before leaving the game. That is the version of Acuña the Braves desperately need moving forward.
The numbers overall still do not look like vintage Acuña yet. Entering Thursday, the former MVP carried a .252 batting average with two home runs and a .742 OPS through 36 games. By his standards, those are modest numbers.
But context matters here. Acuña is still trying to fully reestablish rhythm after multiple serious knee injuries and another frustrating absence earlier this year. Few players in baseball have placed more stress on their bodies through explosive athleticism, speed and violent swing mechanics over the last several seasons.

That is why every injury scare feels amplified. Braves fans have already watched him recover from torn ACLs in both knees. They understand how quickly optimism can shift into another long rehabilitation timeline.
The encouraging part for Atlanta is the wording the team used Thursday night.
“Precaution” is the exact word the Braves, and their fans wanted to hear.
Manager Walt Weiss had already expressed concern earlier in the series about Acuña playing on Miami’s turf surface, making the outfielder’s availability a storyline before the game even started. That only added to the anxiety once he headed toward the dugout early. Now the attention immediately shifts to Friday’s series opener against the Washington Nationals.
If Acuña is back in the lineup quickly, Thursday’s scare will likely fade into just another tense moment in a season already full of them. But it also served as another reminder of the reality surrounding Atlanta’s championship hopes. Everything feels different when Ronald Acuña Jr. is healthy.
