Rockstar Games has recently claimed that the reason why they fired employees who were part of the British Trade Union was that they were leaking GTA 6 information. This bold claim came after the UK government got involved with the case.
In a new statement provided to IGN, Rockstar Games' spokesperson explained that the group of fired employees was discussing confidential data, including information about upcoming titles in "public forums". They further denied the connection between the firings and the employees being in a union.
“Rockstar Games took action against a small group of individuals, across the UK and internationally, who distributed and discussed confidential information (including specific game features from upcoming and unannounced titles) in a public forum, in breach of company policy and their legal obligations. Claims that these dismissals were linked to union membership or activities are entirely false and misleading.”In late October 2025, the GTA creators fired a total of 34 employees from their UK and Canada offices. The IWGB [Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain] protested against the firings, claiming that they were done to squash union formation within the company.
There was a lot of back and forth between Rockstar and the fired employees, accompanied by IWGB. The company claimed that workers were fired because they were discussing confidential information on union Discord messages, while the IWGB kept claiming that it was union-busting.
The exact union Discord server messages were also revealed later in November by the People Make Games YouTube channel. The video showed that the changes in Stack policies in the company were shared in the union Discord server for employees who logged off for the day. This resulted in the company investigating the Discord server, finding the messages, and eventually firing the employees.
Alongside this, the IWGB slammed legal claims against the company, further escalating the matter. The situation was even discussed in the UK parliament on December 10, 2025.
UK Prime Minister "concerned" about GTA Studios firing union workers
During the UK Parliament meeting that took place on December 10, 2025, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer talked about Rockstar Games firing union workers and how the government is looking into the matter.
In the meeting that was live-streamed by The Guardian, Rockstar North's local MP, Chris Murray, briefed the parliament members on the situation. The UK Prime Minister stood up and stated that it was a saddening case, and other ministers in the government are investigating the matter and will also keep Murray updated.
Here's what Sir Keir Starmer said:
"It's a deeply concerning case. Every worker has the right to join a trade union and we're determined to strengthen workers rights and ensure they don't face unfair consequences for being part of a union. Our ministers will look into the particular case that he [Murray] raises and will keep him updated." [Timestamp - 34:00]As of now, it is not confirmed whether the fired employees were leaking information about GTA 6 or not. The game is still set to release on November 19, 2026, with no further delays announced.
